School/College Speaking Exam focus

Talking doesn’t need to be terrifying

Throughout my years of classroom teaching, the one skill area which causes most concern to students (of all ages), is ‘Speaking’ (or as it’s sometimes called ‘the Oral exam’). There are numerous reasons for this, ranging from lack of time allotted to speaking in traditional language courses, through to the ‘psychology’ of classroom dynamics and the fear of making mistakes.

In addition, a common misconception of many students is that we need to be fluent in French in order to be understood and that being fluent in French means speaking flawless French. This is simply not true. Fluency means being able to communicate effectively and confidently in a manner which is easily understood by the native speaker and, like physical exercise, the more you practice, the easier it becomes.

Confidence is key

What we really want, is the confidence to be able to communicate our desired message effectively (and of course to understand the response, when someone answers us in French).

Remember, when someone from a foreign country speaks to us in English, we don’t need them to give a perfectly formulated sentence, in order to understand what they’re trying to communicate. The same applies to us when we speak in another language. We aim for that ‘perfect’ sentence, but if we get it wrong, we can still make ourselves understood. An added bonus is that you are far more likely to recall key vocabulary and phrases in French if you have encountered them in oral conversation than by simply having read them. This is because oral practice draws from and exercises your active memory rather than your passive one.

Open up those opportunities!

Imagine how different your approach to learning and using your French will be, if you can turn those worries into wonderful opportunities? Small steps lead to success in the speaking exam and success in everyday situations.

Whatever level of French you’re looking to achieve, maintain or improve upon, I will help you get there.
